Call Instructions – When should you call Luna & Sol?

During a miscarriage

Don’t hesitate to contact us in the following situations:

• Severe bleeding
• Dizziness, excessive sweating, or feeling faint
• Fever (above 38 degrees)
• Severe abdominal cramps that are difficult to tolerate
• Persistent bleeding and abdominal cramps after a miscarriage
• Anxiety, even if you can’t precisely explain why

A miscarriage can have a significant physical and emotional impact. You don’t have to bear this alone. We are here to look with you, guide you, and discuss what is needed.

Advice during a miscarriage

• Bleeding: This is often more than a normal menstruation.
• Pain relief: You may take paracetamol (maximum 1000 mg every 6 hours).
• Hygiene: Use only sanitary pads, no tampons or menstrual cups.
• Bath/Swimming Pool: Do not bathe or swim (showering is allowed) to prevent infections.
• Do not have sexual intercourse while bleeding continues. 

After the miscarriage

• Be aware of red or brown bleeding that may continue for up to 3 weeks.
• Call the midwife if you are still bleeding 3 weeks after the miscarriage.
• Wait with intercourse until the bleeding has stopped.

During pregnancy

Don't hesitate to contact us in the following situations:

• Heavy bright red bleeding
• After a fall on your belly or a hard blow or kick to your belly
• Feeling less movement from your baby after 28 weeks of pregnancy
• Symptoms that may indicate high blood pressure (persistent headache, blurred vision, flashes of light or seeing stars, pain or a tightening sensation in the upper abdomen, nausea, vomiting, or suddenly retaining a lot of fluid. (These symptoms do not improve after rest or paracetamol)
• Contractions, abdominal pain or amniotic fluid loss before 37 weeks of pregnancy
• Sudden and/or persistent fluid loss (possibly ruptured membranes)
• Persistent abdominal pain or painful Braxton Hicks contractions
• Fever (38°C or higher)
• Restlessness, even if you can't exactly explain why

Trust your instincts. If something doesn't feel right, even if it's not described here, you can always call. 

During labor

Do you think labor has started? Then you can always call us. You don’t have to be sure, we will look together at what’s going on and what’s needed.

In any case, contact us immediately in the following situations:

Before 37 weeks of pregnancy

• Contractions, stomach pain and/or amniotic fluid loss before 37 weeks

Contractions

• With your first child: regular contractions that come every 3 minutes for two hours, last about one minute, and are painful
• With a second or subsequent child: contractions that come every 5 minutes for one hour and last about 45 seconds (unless we have agreed differently)

Bleeding

A little mucus or light bleeding is normal towards or during labor.

• Call immediately with more than one pad of bright red bleeding. Preserve the bleeding if possible, so we can take a look.

Ruptured membranes

• Always call immediately, regardless of the time, if there is yellow, green or brown amniotic fluid
• Call also immediately if the baby’s head has not descended
• If the amniotic fluid is clear, the membranes break at night and you haven’t had any contractions yet? Then you may rest for a while and call us in the morning
• During the day (between 9:00 AM and 9:00 PM), we would like to hear if your membranes break and the amniotic fluid is clear

Are you unsure if your membranes have ruptured? Use a pad or sandwich bag to catch fluid. If you are still uncertain, contact us for consultation.

Also call when:

• you feel that labor has really started
• you are worried or don’t trust it
• you are having contractions every 3-4 minutes in addition to ruptured membranes

In the postpartum period

Even after birth, we remain involved.

Are you in doubt or concerned? Always contact us. We will look into it with you and discuss what is needed.

Call us in the following situations:

For the mother

• Fever of 38°C or higher
• Severe bleeding or passing large clots
• Increasing abdominal pain or pain that does not subside
• Pain while urinating or inability to urinate
• Breast infection: a painful, red spot on the breast combined with a flu-like feeling or fever
• Stitches that are very painful, continue to bleed, or appear to be opening
• If you feel very gloomy, anxious, or overwhelmed

For the baby

• Temperature below 36.5°C or above 38.0°C
• Poor feeding or gradually drinking less
• Lethargy or difficult to wake
• Breathlessness, grunting, or rapid breathing
• Jaundice that is increasing or spreading to the abdomen, arms, or legs
• Few wet diapers or no bowel movement when one is expected
