Postpartum Period

Our support during the postpartum week

After the birth, we naturally remain involved with you. When you are home, we come by regularly to see how you and your baby are doing.

During the postpartum week, we work closely with the maternity caregiver. She is present with you daily, supports the care of mother and baby, and monitors, among other things, the recovery, temperature, nutrition, and well-being of your child. She also helps with breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, provides practical tips, and helps you become more familiar with caring for your baby.

De maternity nurse and we have short lines of communication with each other. In case of questions or special matters, she consults with us. We remain medically responsible as midwives for the care during the maternity period.

Most of the time we come every other day to visit you. During our visits, we discuss how you are doing, assess the recovery after the birth, and follow the health and development of your baby. Of course, there is plenty of room for questions, uncertainties, or issues you may encounter.

We also find it important to pay attention to how you experienced the birth. If you feel the need, we take our time during the maternity week to reflect together on the birth.

We try to schedule our visits in the morning or after the rest period in the afternoon. This way, we take into account the rest and recovery of the mother.

As we also assist with births and emergency situations, it can sometimes happen that we arrive later than planned or have to reschedule a visit. We always contact you, so you know what to expect.

Examinations in the first week

In the first week after birth, two examinations are done on your baby: the heel prick and the hearing test. These examinations are part of a national screening program and are intended to detect any conditions or hearing problems early.

The tests are usually conducted at home by a youth health care worker (JGZ). This often happens around the same period, usually between day 4 and 7 after birth.

During our visits in the maternity period, we are happy to explain what to expect and there is always room to ask questions.

Own contribution maternity care in 2026

Maternity care is reimbursed in the Netherlands from the basic insurance. For home maternity care, you will pay in 2026 a statutory personal contribution of € 5.70 per hour.

Do you have an additional insurance? Then this personal contribution can be fully or partially reimbursed. This varies by health insurer and insurance package. Therefore, always check the terms of your own health insurance.

Good to know: the statutory personal contribution for maternity care does not fall under the deductible.
